- Test every carbon monoxide alarm. Non-negotiable in any home with gas appliances, and doubly so with an attic furnace you cannot hear.
- Check attic pipe insulation while you are up there for the furnace inspection. It is the same trip.
- Locate your main water shutoff and confirm it turns. Do this now, in daylight, not at 2am with water coming through a ceiling.

- Propane owners: check the tank level and arrange delivery ahead of a forecast cold snap rather than during one.
When a Freeze Is Forecast
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm room air reaches the plumbing.
- Let a faucet drip on the runs most exposed to cold. Moving water is far harder to freeze than still water.
- Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets.

- Do not close vents in unused rooms. It seems economical and it lowers temperature in those rooms — which are often the ones with the most exposed pipe.

During a Hard Freeze
If the heat fails, treat it as urgent rather than waiting for morning. It is not just discomfort: the attic is losing the warmth those water lines depend on. Call, and in the meantime close off unused rooms to concentrate whatever heat remains, keep faucets dripping, and if the house is dropping toward freezing, shutting off the water supply and draining the lines is a legitimate protective measure.
If the power fails, a gas furnace still will not run — its blower and controls need electricity. Never use a gas oven, cooktop, grill or unvented outdoor heater to heat a house. Every freeze event in Texas produces carbon monoxide poisonings from exactly that, and it is the most predictable avoidable harm of the whole week. Generators belong outdoors, well away from doors and windows.
If you smell gas or a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 and your gas utility. That comes before any repair scheduling, in any weather.
After It Passes
Check the attic for pipe leaks once things thaw — a pipe can crack while frozen and only leak once water flows again, which is why damage often appears a day after the cold breaks. Check the ceiling below for staining. And if the heating struggled or failed, get it looked at in the following weeks rather than in the next cold snap; that is a considerably calmer conversation.
